Owning is a small village and parish about 20 kilometres north of Oxford, halfway between the market towns of Banbury and Bicester.
In 1837, A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland described the parish of Owning as consisting of 3652 acres (1478 hectares) containing 1281 inhabitants. The village comprised about 12 houses. Owning was also part of the Roman Catholic district of Templeorum, which contained a chapel and two national schools, with about 140 children, and a Sunday school.
